THATTEKKAD BIRD SANCTUARY

THATTEKKAD is the only bird sanctuary in Kerala . Situated in Ernakulam district, this PA is a feast to the eyes and music to the ears. Several species of birds found in South India are seen here. The famous ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali, was the architect of this sanctuary. He is reported to have identified 167 birds. The Bombay Natural History Society has identified 253 species of birds in Thattekkad. Spread over an extend of 25.16 sq km, Thattekkad attracts nature lovers from far and wide. Thattekkad is approximate 75 kms away from Kochi city.

  Cochin - Thattekkad Birding Camp – Cochin

Starting with a pick-up from the Kochi at 6.30 am . , we take you to the famous Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary for a days trip.   Cochin - Thattekkad Birding Camp – Cochin

The Thattekkad Birding Camp is located on the edge of Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Thattekkad. Surrounded by deciduous and semi evergreen tropical forests and River Periyar following by, Thattekkad Birding Camp is located in prime birding country.  The best option to reach the camp is to trek from Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary through an enchanting birding trail. At the camp, take a refreshing dip in the secluded lake or just soak in the sun. After lunch go for a birding trek with our Ornithologist or explore the lake in a canoe. Your stay will be in a tree top Machan or in tents. This is elephant country too, and guests should be cautious not to venture into the jungle alone. Our crew can identify most of the night sounds. A bird watching tour through Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, to explore its bird life in the company of our ornithologist. In this two nights and three days trip, we assure you a minimum of 100 species of birds. Accommodation in a Thattekkad birding Camp, located in the midst of jungle in a plantation near the sanctuary, simple vegetarian food, guided birding tour etc in and around the sanctuary are all included in this tour. A tour through the famous Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, to explore its bird life in the company of our ornithologist. Twelve of the sixteen endemic birds of Western Ghats are found in this sanctuary. CHIMMONY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY.
Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary, located near Trichur, is only two hours drive from Kochi . It is 100 Sq.Km in area and has an incredible bird, butterfly and animal diversity. West-coast tropical evergreen forests, West-coast semi-evergreen forests and South-Indian moist deciduous forest constitute the Sanctuary.

Chimmony is 95 kms away from Kochi city, 40 kms from Thrissur town and 25 kms from Amballur junction on Ernakulam – Thrissur route.

  SKP :105 : THE CHIMMONY NATURE TRAIL (One day)

Have a brief interlude with Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary. The program starts with an introduction to the PA at eight am . Our naturalist and an ecoguide from the local indigenous community that runs this ecotourism program will accompany you. You will be initiated into butterfly and bird watching. The ecoguide from the indigenous Malaya community will show the common medicinal herbs used by them. See the incredible floral diversity. Take a dip in the crystal clear waters of a mountain stream.   SKP :106 : Wild Serendipity - 1 night 2 days

A perfect opportunity to discover the wildlife enthusiast in you. Herds of Asiatic Elephants, Gaurs, Sambars, Troops of macaques and langurs, and Malabar giant squirrels roam freely in this Protected Area. Sighting them in the lush tropical jungles of Chimmony requires pots of luck and serendipity. But experience them you will.

Day One
we arrive at Chimmony by 8 a.m. You will be given an introduction to the PA and meet the ecoguides from the local indigenous community, the Malayas, who will accompany you. A four hour trek through lush tropical semi-evergreen jungles will take us to our base camp. If you are light walker, we will transfer you to the camp by boat/raft. Enroute you may chance upon a sambar or a Malabar Giant Squirrel or a Troop of Nilgiri Langur. Simple Vegetarian meals will be served in the camp. Our naturalist will take you for a nature walk after lunch. Back in the camp, forget the wearies of the world in a pool in the nearby stream. After dinner listen to the Malaya people talk about their concern for these jungles, the role they have in protecting it, jungle lores handed over from generations to generations. Star gaze in the clear sky. Overnight sleep in tents and sleeping bags.

Day Two
Wake up early, have tea and snacks and go with our naturalist on a Butterfly and bird watching trip. There are more than 200 species of birds and 100 species of butterflies in Chimmony. Return to camp for breakfast. Then we trek back to Chimmony. Have Lunch in the Forest Inspection Bungalow. At Chimmony, meet representatives from the Malaya community that runs this ecotourism programme and directly give your feedbacks and suggestions. Buy locally and help the community. Visit the souvenir shop run by the community and take back wild honey, herbal body and hair care powders, T-shirts, cork sandals, hand made stationary etc.

  SKP :107 : Exploring Chimmony - 2Nights 3 Days

Day One
we arrive at Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary in the morning by 8 am . You will be briefed about the PA and how this community based ecotourism programme will benefit the local indigenous people, the Malayans. We take a canoe ride across Chimmony Lake , deep into the jungles and then a short hike to our camp for day one. You are at leisure in the early afternoon. You can learn to cook some local dishes. Simple vegetarian meals will be cooked and served at the camp. You are at leisure in the early afternoon. You can learn to cook some local dishes. In the afternoon, our naturalist will take you for a walk through lush tropical jungle to watch birds and butterflies. Expect to see Grey Headed Fishing Eagle, Hornbills, Drongos, Barbets, Bulbuls, Cormorants, Indian Darter, Babblers, Wagtails and butterflies including Blue Mormon, Bottle Green, Tailed Jay, Sword Tail, Jezebel, Sailors, Pansies, and the Southern Birdwing, India’s Largest butterfly. Learn to read animal signs and evidences. You will see some rare and endemic orchids flowering. There are chances of spotting wild animals too. But don’t except to walk into a tiger. That requires a longer stay. You may see Asiatic Elephant, Sambar, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque, and Gaur. Your ecoguides will identify the medicinal herbs they use. Over dinner exchange worldviews with your hosts. Your accommodation will be in tents. Sleeping bags are provided.

Day Two
Wakeup at 5.30 with tea and snacks. Go for an early morning nature walk with our naturalist. After breakfast, a three hour’s trek will take us to our camping site for day two. Expect to see wild animals during the trek. At camp, you are at leisure in the early afternoon. Perhaps you would like to relax under a cascade of the nearby mountain stream. After lunch visit a nearby Rainforest patch, watch birds. There are more than 200 species of birds in Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary. A longer trek will take you to a cultural site. See and learn about Dolmens. Back in the camp discuss with your hosts, over dinner, their role in preserving these jungles. Listen to their jungle lore, encounters with wild animals…. long into the night. Star gaze. Learn to identify nocturnal birds by their calls. Or just let the jungle sounds lull you to sleep. Spend the night sleeping in tents.

Day Three
Wakeup at 5.30 with tea and snacks. An early morning birding trip will further lengthen your bird list including some rare endemics. After breakfast we trek back to Chimmony. Meet representatives from the Malayan community and give your opinions and suggestions directly to your hosts. They run a souvenir shop. Buy Wild Honey, T-Shirts, Cork Sandals, Handmade stationary Etc. Profit from this shop goes for welfare of the community. Make a purchase and contribute to the community. Peechi Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Thrissur District of Central Kerala. This Protected Area can be reached by a two and half hours drive from Kochi . This PA has a wide variety of birds, butterflies, mammals, wild flowers and medicinal herbs. Studies claim that there are ten species of Woodpeckers in these jungle. Best season: September to March.

CHINNAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Chinnar is located in the rain shadow regions of High Ranges in the Southern Western Ghats . Approximately 65 kms away from Munnar and 205 kms from Ernakulam and is open through out the year. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary (90.422 sq. km) is famous for wildlife sighting. Its dry deciduous forests makes it easier to view the wildlife. Undulating terrain with rocky patches increase the scenic splendor of the sanctuary. The forest type comprise thorny scrub forests, dry deciduous forests, high altitude sholas and wet montane grasslands. Apart from this, this area is noted for its archaeological importance too. The Dolmens, built between first and fifth century CE are one of the major attractions among them. H erds of Asiatic Elephants, Gaur, Spotted Deer, Tiger, the elusive Leopard, the legendry ‘white bison of Manjampatti’, and the colorful bird and butterfly life makes Chinnar a must see destination in the wildlife map of Western Ghats.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the rain-shadow areas of the High Ranges of Southern Western Ghats in Kerala. It was declared a PA in August 1984 and is 90.442 sq.km. In area. Chinnar wildlife Sanctuary is one of the important PAs in Western Ghats due to its ecological, floral and geo-morphological significances. It falls between 10° 15' to 10° 21' north latitude and 77° 05' to 77° 16' east longitude.

How to reach - Chinnar is accessible from Kochi (208 km) and Coimbatore (115 km). The nearest town is Munnar (65 km) and 25 kms from Marayoor on Munnar - Udumalpet highway. Best Season - This PA is open through out the year. Best season to visit is September to March.

 
  SKP :111 : One day trek

On Arrival at Chinnar at 7 am , you will be guided by trained guides from the local indigenous community to a Cultural site through the dry deciduous forests of Chinnar. With luck, we may see spotted deer, Sambar, Gaur etc. Our naturalist will assist in spotting and identifying birds and butterflies. We may see Peafowl, Spotted dove, Bee eaters, Pied crested cuckoo, Grey jungle fowl, Painted quail, Parakeets, Bulbuls, Minivets, Iora, Orioles, Grey tit, Babblers, Indian Roller, Woodpeckers, Barbets, Drongos, Mynas, Flycatchers, Sunbirds, Shrikes etc. Parrots, Common crow, Tigers, Pansies, Jezebel, Mormons, Tailed jay, Sailors, Grass Yellow etc are the butterflies you may see. After lunch, go for a short trek through the riparian forest along the Chinnar River . This forest is the ideal habitat to one of the most endangered mammals of India , the Grizzled Giant Squirrel. They are found only in two PAs, Chinnar and Srivalliputhur Wildlife. It is not difficult to spot them. You may also see the Indian Mugger basking on a rock at Koottar.

  SKP :112 : The Vasyappara Trek - One night and two days

Day 1 . We start early in the morning, after tea and snacks, from your hotel at Marayoor. It is the nearest town to Chinnar and is famous for it’s Sandal Forest . We reach Champakad at 7am and meet our team of local guides from the Hill Pulaya community who will accompany you into the jungle. You can also get a quick glimpse of early morning life in your host’s village. The trek through the dry deciduous forests of Chinnar will give you a chance to acquaint with this unique type of forest and its myriad wildlife. Midway, have light breakfast and see the unique geo-morphological formations around you. We reach our campsite, Vasyappara, after a two and a half hour’s trek. The last stretch of the climb may make you short of breath. You stay in a thatched hut, built using traditional knowledge and local resources. It is on a ledge on top of a hill. The hut is site sensitive and comfortable. It also doubles as a patrol station and vantage lookout for forest fire and illegal logging. Thus, when you choose our programme, you are also helping in the conservation of this natural heritage.

In the afternoon after lunch and siesta, go for a short trek to spot the Grizzled Giant Squirrel. Later, as the shadows lengthen we may see herds of Asiatic Elephants, Indian Gaur, Sambar, Spotted Deer grazing in the plains below. It is an ideal place for wildlife viewing and star gazing. With luck, you might also see the elusive ‘white bison of Manjampatti’. Simple vegetarian food is cooked and served by your hosts. Share stimulating conversation with them by a campfire. Listen to fascinating jungle sounds and learn to identify the sources.

Day 2. Morning, enjoy a spectacular mountain sunrise. After breakfast, trek back to Chinnar. Look out for pugmarks of a tiger or leopard along the trek path. At Chinnar, give your comments and suggestions directly to representatives from the local community. Visit the souvenir shop run by them. Your purchases will help to fund community development initiatives. Throughout the trek, an experienced naturalist will assist you.

Day One
Program starts at 8 am in the morning. Walk back into history with ecoguides from the local community and our naturalist. Visit a site where stone-age people once built their burial chambers known as Dolmens. Enroute we may see Peafowl, Spotted dove, Bee eaters, Pied crested cuckoo, Grey jungle fowl, Painted quail, Parakeets, Bulbuls, Minivets, Iora, Orioles, Grey tit, Babblers, Indian Roller, Woodpeckers, Barbets, Drongos, Mynas, Flycatchers, Sunbirds etc. Common crow, Tigers, Pansies, Jezebel, Mormons, Tailed jay, Sailors, Grass Yellow etc are the butterflies you may see. There are chances of seeing wild animals too. After lunch, go for a short trek through the riparian forest along the Chinnar River . This forest is the ideal habitat to one of the most endangered mammals of India , the Grizzled Giant Squirrel. Trek to a cave to see ancient rock paintings. A short visit to the nearby tribal settlement will give an unique insight into the everyday life and culture of the Hill Pulayas. The dry deciduous forest of Chinnar gives you an excellent opportunity to watch wildlife at close quarters. Spend the night in a Machan (tree house) at Koottar or Champakad.

Day Two
Wake up early morning and trek to Vasyappara Hut. It is a traditional thatched hut built on a ledge on the top of a hill. The splendor of the vast stretch of jungle spread below you is unforgettable. You may see herds of Indian Gaur, Sambar, Spotted Deer etc. Take short nature walks and birding trips. You are part of a joint patrolling team (local community + Forest and Wildlife Department) that monitors poaching and illegal logging when you choose this programme. Trained tribal guides and an armed park guard with communication equipment accompany you during the trek. Simple vegetarian meals are cooked and served by your hosts.

Day Three
After breakfast, trek back to Chinnar. Give your comments and suggestions directly to representatives from the local community. Visit the souvenir shop run by them. Your purchases will help to fund community development initiatives.

PERIYAR TIGER RESERVE

Periyar Tiger Reserve is the oldest and largest Protected Area in Kerala. It is 777sq. km. in area. The 28 sq. km. Periyar Lake around which the Protected Area is situated was formed when a dam was built across River Periyar in 1895. The forest around the lake was declared as Nellikkampetty Game Sanctuary in 1934. In 1950 the Nellikkampetty Game Sanctuary was enlarged into the 777sq.km. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. It became a Tiger Reserve in 1978. In 1982, the first notification declaring the core zone (350sq. km.) of Periyar Tiger Reserve as a National Park was issued. PTR and its surrounding forests form the largest chunk of tropical rainforests in Western Ghats . It lies between latitudes 9 degree 15’ S and 9 degree 40’ N and longitudes 76 degree 55’ W and 77 degree 25’ E. PTR is arguably the most visited PA in India .

Sixty three species of mammals have been recorded from PTR. Periyar has a good population of Asiatic elephants (about 900-1000). The checklist of birds has 323 species. All the Western Ghats endemics except the Nilgiri laughing thrush are found here. Out of the 119 species of butterflies recorded, 20 are Western Ghats endemics.

PTR pioneered community based ecotourism in India . There are several programmes run by local communities. A visitor can choose from an early morning trek to a 2 nights & 3 days camping and trekking in the jungles to a day long bamboo raft ride. Some of these programmes have won prestigious ecotourism awards.

How to Reach : The nearest railway station Kottayam is 114 km. from Thekkady, the HQ of the Tiger Reserve. Kochi International Airport is 190 Km. away. Kochi City is 190 km. away and Madurai is 135 km away. The nearest town Kumily is 2 km. from Thekkady. Kumily lies along the Kochi — Madurai highway.

Best Season : The best season to visit the PA is from September to May. The temperature varies from 15degree C to 31 degree C. The evenings are cool.

  SKP :114 : Explore Periyar I - 2 Nights and 3 Days

 

Day1
Arrive at Periyar by noon and check into Bamboo Grove Ecolodge. Bamboo Grove is arguably the only ecolodge in India run by local communities. After lunch, visit the tribal heritage Museum followed by a walk through the Mannan village. The museum is a veritable treasure trove of artifacts from their traditional agricultural practices, marriage ceremony, rituals, costumes, arts and crafts. On display are fishing gear, weaponry, indigenous medicine, vessels, cereals, medicinal herbs, musical instruments, bamboo furniture etc. At 4 pm go for a boat cruise in Lake Periyar to spot wildlife. Back in Bamboo grove after the cruise. Dinner, Overnight stay

Day2
After breakfast, go for a day long bamboo raft ride, the most popular Ecotourism activity in Periyar. Your hosts are poachers turned protector of PTR. You trek for a few kilometers and then ride a bamboo raft that seats 6 visitors. Packed lunch is served by your hosts. You can explore some remote inlets of Periyar Lake with your hosts and an armed park guard. You have good chances of spotting wildlife. The raft ride ends at 5 pm and you trek back to Thekkady. Overnight stay in bamboo grove.

Day 3
Wake up early with Tea and snacks and go for an early morning trek. After breakfast visit a spice plantation. Have lunch and go for shopping for spice, artifacts, souvenirs, in Kumily and Thekkady. After an early dinner go shepherding the night ( 7pm-10pm ). Unique night trek through the jungle with a patrolling party designed to protect the eco development zone of PTR from illegal activities. While you get a fair chance to spot nocturnal animals and birds. Overnight in Bamboo grove.

Day 4
After breakfast check out of Bamboo grove.
